Panic Attacks – Can They Be Stopped Without Taking Drugs?

Panic attacks, which incidentally are much the same as anxiety attack, will come quickly, and with a vengeance. They usually hit you at the worst possible moment. If you have had one I'm sure you pray you don't get another. Well your prayers could be about to come true.

Hit Like A Train

My wife was driving when she was struck by her first panic attack. Clearly this could have had disastrous consequences. When we both got over the shock, and let me tell you I was as shocked as her. We went to visit our doctor.

We got a standard lesson on the facts. Nothing to worry about, never in any real danger etc etc. Then we got a prescription for beta blockers. I mention "we" got prescribed beta blockers as I really felt I was involved as much as my wife in all this. The drugs would slow her heart rate and stop the onset of the attacks, fingers crossed.

We tentatively went out in the car again and sure enough at the same junction my wife started to feel an attack coming on. The result was a panic attack but with a calm heart rate. She said it was the strangest feeling having a panic attack but at the same time feeling quite calm.

Stick The Drugs In The Trash

I drove us home and we threw the drugs into the trash. A full 9 months went by and she never drove the car once. My wife had mixed emotions because while not driving she was panic attack free, she could not bring herself to drive.

We couldn't let this situation go on. Her not being able to drive for fear of having an attack at the wheel. I went on the web and did a bit of digging. We tried a few different things, with mixed results. We never found anything that really worked for long.

We Tried Hundreds...And Then Some

We then happened across yet another "method" to supposedly stop them. As we had tried everything we found so far we tried this also. Initial results were ok. We knew any success was because of the method and not the drugs, which she wasn't taking. At the first attempt when she felt the overpowering urge to panic and scream, she put the method into play. She got through this attack ok.

When we talked after, she said she still had an attack but she managed to keep it at bay. Just knowing she had been able to lower the intensity was a huge boost in itself. She now felt the power within herself to stop the next attack dead. She didn't quite manage this.

Easy Does It

But she did manage to decrease it effect. Each and every time she felt an attacking growing she decreased its effects. Pretty quickly she got to the stage where she can recognise the signs and stop it dead in its tracks.
