Depression Medications

Just because you feel sad and depressed for a few days does not mean that you have depression.  Depression is a very serious disease that can last for years.  Studies have show that around 15 million Americans are affected by this illness each and every year.  The sad fact is that only a third of those Americans will ever seek help for their affliction.  All too often people avoid recognizing or admitting that they suffer from depression because of the negative archetypes associated with mental illnesses.  Depression is a progressive illness.  It will get worse without treatment or depression medication.  It cannot be ignored.

Depression is caused by a variety of factors.  These include the whole spectrum of genetic, biological, physical and emotional items.  Simple daily life and surroundings are important.  It can be caused by stress brought on by even more detrimental factors.  It takes a lot of knowledge to address a complex issue like depression.  As well, the human brain and its workings are quite complex.  The medical profession is working steadily in an attempt to study the mind and how it works.  We know that depression is caused by a chemical imbalance in the brain.  We are learning more every day about how the whole process works.  The phrase is "learning is half the battle" and with depression knowledge is power.

There are a variety of depression medications available to treat this illness.  Miracle treatments also exist, but many times these are empty claims.  You have to be careful to seek medications that have been clinically studied and have been proven to display positive effects in the treatment of depression.  There was a time in our history if you were afflicted by anything that was associated with mental illness you were thrown into a mental ward and lost in the system.  Fortunately that has all been changed.  It was 1988 when Prozac, an anti-depressant, first came into wide use in America.  It has bee proven effective and is still in use today although it does come with side effects.

A new class of anti-depressants has become widely used since then.  Currently depression is being treated with SSRI or (Selective Serotonin Reuptake Inhibitors) such as Paxil, Zoloft, Lexapro, Celexa, and Luvox.  All have been proven effective but come with varied side effects.  There are also numerous natural herbal depression medications available on the market.  The ingredient in St. John's Wort extract, heperforin, is present in those that prove every bit as effective as anti-depressant drugs.   If this ingredient is used in the proper strength it is effective.  Be careful, do your research and you will find effective depression medications.
