Panic Attack Treatment- Get The Facts!

What exactly causes panic attacks is not clearly known, but the predisposition for panic disorder is usually genetic. Stressful situations can trigger panic attacks, e. G. Getting divorced, having a baby, the death of someone close, or losing your job. The ways to receive panic attack treatment are with medication, therapy, or both.

Cognitive behavioral therapy involves changing the brain's thought process and the behavior that triggers a panic attack. This helps the patient see their fears in a more positive way.

Cognitive behavioral therapy works by getting the brain to realize that nothing bad is going to during a panic attack even though the symptoms may tell you otherwise. If you experience a panic attack while driving, you will feel that something awful is about to happen because you feel out of control and frightened. Of course, nothing will happen if you pull off the road and let the panic attack take its course.

Exposure therapy confronts panic disorder head-on. By getting the patient to physically repeat the symptoms of a panic attack - hyperventilating, holding the breath, or shaking with fear - the brain starts reacting less and less to the fear associated with a panic attack, and gradually attacks decrease.

Other highly rated therapies are acupuncture, hypnosis, biofeedback and hypnosis. All therapies for panic disorder are effective because they essentially enable the sufferer to control the disorder, as opposed to the disorder controlling them.

Severe cases of panic disorder usually need to be treated with medication as well as therapy. Common drugs that offer quick relief from a panic attack are benzodiazepines. Treatment, however, is generally short-term because benzodiazepines can become highly addictive.

Sometimes doctors will prescribe anti-depressants for panic or anxiety disorders because anti-depressants keep the brain's chemicals balanced. Anti-depressants are not effective for use during a panic attack.

Medication is effective in getting panic disorder controlled. Once the disorder is manageable, you will need to make certain lifestyle changes that include healthy eating, exercising regularly and getting enough sleep.

Self-help is essential, and you will benefit by learning about panic disorder and why it happens. Read literature on the subject and you'll soon realize that you're not 'mad' and that millions of people around the world have come to terms with panic disorder.

Try to stay away from caffeine and smoking - both can cause a panic attack, or make it worse. Don't take medications like diet tablets or certain medications for colds that contain substances that keep you awake.

By learning how to breathe properly you can control hyperventilation during a panic attack. Hyperventilation causes the chest to become tight and induces feelings of light-headedness. Slow, deep breathing will calm you down and reduce the severity of the panic attack.

Meditation and yoga are also highly recommended to help your body relax. When muscles are relaxed, they can cope with the anxiety and fear associated with panic attacks. An added bonus is that yoga and meditation are known to stimulate feelings of happiness.
