A Young Man Makes an Appointment to See His Family Physician About His Depression and His Alcohol Problems

Larry decided to go and see his doctor about his careless drinking. At first, Larry thought he would be able to merely go on the world wide web, look for some fundamental alcohol info, and come to a decision whether or not he was an alcoholic. Not unexpectedly, he found several websites that outlined some of the common alcoholism symptoms. That’s the good news. The less positive news, regrettably, was that Larry manifested a number of these alcoholism symptoms.

Alcoholism Symptoms: Some Illustrations

As a case in point, Larry was drinking a lot more than normal and he was beginning to have more highly charged squabbles with the female he was dating. Moreover, for the first time in his young life he was suffering through sleeping issues. In a similar manner, Larry regularly felt depressed and on an increasing basis he had been exhibiting poor attention to detail while at work.

Moreover, he felt stressed out and more jumpy on a daily basis and for the past eight or nine months he had shown signs of foggy thinking at his place of employment. Since Larry displayed all of these symptoms, he was understandably uncomfortable about his hazardous drinking.

So Larry finally made up his mind to contact his family healthcare practitioner and ask for an appointment. In fact, this was somewhat demanding for Larry because his family doctor was also his parents’ family healthcare practitioner. The springboard for his distress was this: at the risk of embarrassing his family, he had to go and reveal his reckless and abusive drinking behavior to his family physician.

When Larry arrived at the healthcare practitioner’s office, he candidly notified the healthcare practitioner about the apprehension he felt about his abusive drinking behavior. When the family physician asked what was bringing about this consternation, Larry stated that he had gone on the world wide web and read about alcohol addiction and especially about alcohol addiction symptoms. He then mentioned all of the alcohol addiction symptoms that he undeniably thought he possessed.

A Comprehensive Physical Exam and Outpatient Alcohol Rehabilitation

The family physician told Larry that it was prudent of him to concentrate on his drinking problems, he gave Larry an exhaustive physical exam, and recommended that he go into an out-patient alcohol treatment center that was supervised by one of his doctor partners.

What is more, when Larry mentioned that he had been feeling depressed more repeatedly, the physician informed Larry that alcoholism and depression often come about in the same person. Accordingly, the family physician also suggested that Larry get counseling to address his melancholy.

The Advantage of Handling Your Drinking Difficulties

The healthcare professional made it a point to tell Larry that he might not inevitably be addicted to alcohol, but that he was certainly drinking in a hazardous manner. The physician then told Larry that the reason he suggested alcohol rehab in the first place was because he wanted him to sort out his drinking issues, make sure that he stopped them from getting worse, and start to live in a more healthy manner, even if it meant that he had to entirely refrain from drinking.

When all's said and done, by successfully treating his problem drinking, Larry would be able to get his problem drinking under control and stop the negative cycle that could potentially result in alcoholism.

Unmistakably, Larry did not want to face the thought of getting admitted into an alcohol rehabilitation center. Nor was he elated about going to a counselor about his melancholy. In the face of these trepidations, then again, Larry in reality felt some emotional relief for the first time in several months because in the end he quit making excuses for himself and at long last finally determined that he needed to do something constructive about his drinking difficulties.

From the winner of the IMPAC Award and the Nobel Prize, a fierce novel about a young Romanian woman's discovery of betrayal in the most intimate reaches of her life "I've been summoned. Thursday, ten sharp." Thus begins one day in the life of a young clothing-factory worker during Ceaucescu's totalitarian regime. She has been questioned before; this time, she believes, will be worse. Her crime? Sewing notes into the linings of men's suits bound for Italy. "Marry me," the notes say, with her name and address. Anything to get out of the country. As she rides the tram to her interrogation, her thoughts stray to her friend Lilli, shot trying to flee to Hungary, to her grandparents, deported after her first husband informed on them, to Major Albu, her interrogator, who begins each session with a wet kiss on her fingers, and to Paul, her lover, her one source of trust, despite his constant drunkenness. In her distraction, she misses her stop to find herself on an unfamiliar street. And what she discovers there makes her fear of the appointment pale by comparison. Herta Müller pitilessly renders the humiliating terrors of a crushing regime. Bone-spare and intense, The Appointment confirms her standing as one of Europe's greatest writers.
