A Young Male Needs Counseling For His Extreme Depression, Relationship Problems, and For His Drug and Alcohol Dependency

Nearly five months ago I had breakfast with a forty-three-year-old man named Alexander who suffers from acute depression, has relationship problems, and who is drug and alcohol dependent. As stated by Alexander, it is his alcohol and drug addiction and his extreme depression that had the most to do with his perpetual relationship problems.

I remember reading that a history of mental health issues, chemical dependency, and unhealthy drinking often occur in the same family. Not only this, but I remember reading that in such situations, an individual needs to get treatment for both medical conditions and that chemical dependency and mental health issues frequently occur in the same person.

As articulated by Alexander, he is so defeated by his relationship problems and by both of his medical problems that he in effect has little or no driving force to do much of anything. What is particularly sad about this is that earlier in his life, Alexander managed to finish four semesters of graduate school in travel and tourism.

Alexander’s circumstance makes me wonder if he is an illustration of a person who can look in the mirror and perceive his drug abuse and alcohol drinking problems and do something constructive about these issues or if he is a person who has to hit rock-bottom before he gets alcohol and drug addiction treatment that leads to long-term sobriety.

The Need For a Treatment Regimen He Can Believe In and a Therapist He Can Trust

If it would be beneficial I would assume that I could suggest more than a few blogs and websites that could possibly help him locate information about drug abuse symptoms, the stages of alcoholism, chemical dependency information, and relationship problems. From my perspective, however, Alexander needs to find a counseling protocol he can believe in and follow over the long term and locate a therapist he can trust.

I could be wrong but it seems logical to conclude that Alexander probably needs to look in the mirror regarding his drug addiction signs and alcoholic symptoms and accept the fact that he cannot use drugs or even drink responsibly if he wants to get sober, stay sober, and start on the route to lasting sobriety.

It may be asked how treatment would help his chemical dependency. First of all, there are several newly discovered doctor-prescribed drugs that can help Alexander through his withdrawal symptoms, through the drug and alcohol detoxification process, and help him avoid an alcohol or a drug relapse.

Second, Alexander would learn to acknowledge the fact that there is utterly nothing beneficial about drug addiction and hazardous and careless drinking and that messing around with one or both conditions is the road to deteriorating health, legal problems, shattered relationships, poor work and school performance, a premature death, and financial difficulties.

Third, treatment for his relationship difficulties and his depression might help him cope with these psychological issues more successfully and possibly create less of a need for him to engage in addictive behavior.

The Importance of Support Groups Like Narcotics Anonymous and Alcoholics Anonymous

There are reasonably a lot of friends, family members, and other individuals who would want to help Alexander with his drug addiction and his negative drinking. He probably would experience greater tolerance from a support group such as Alcoholics Anonymous or Narcotics Anonymous, however, instead of getting guidance from people who do not drink or who have never abused drugs.

When Individuals Accomplish Things They Love and About Which They Are Fervent

There’s a philosophical outlook that proclaims that individuals who do things they like and something about which they are fervent reach a wonderful place in life. Stated more accurately, when people do what they enjoy, they almost never experience boredom or an uneventful life. If they get involved in something that is worthwhile, moreover, they become more actualized and experience more pleasure and joy in life and in their relationships.

When this is thought about for a few moments it becomes apparent that this affirmative frame of mind is widely divergent from a life that is grounded in substance abuse because such a lifestyle removes the satisfaction and delight that life offers.

Due to the fact that Alexander lacks the motivation to succeed at doing much of anything in his life, it is apparent that he desperately needs a little hope for a better existence. And the unfortunate thing is that hope is almost everywhere around Alexander if he could only get to the place in life to get the treatment he needs for his mental illness and alcohol addiction and drug dependence and continue with his treatment protocol.

More Positive Relationships, Positive Change, Self Respect, and a Meaningful Life Are a Reality

Alexander is clearly too young to be beaten in life. He doesn't realize this right now but if he can learn how to remove himself from drugs and alcohol through drug and alcohol therapy and get the treatment he requires for his severe depression, he can reorient his life and start living with self-respect, passion, and direction.

More solid relationships, beneficial change, self esteem, and a meaningful life are certainly a reality for Alexander if only he could get motivated to get the professional rehabilitation he needs, follow through with his therapy program, live his life in a healthy and dependency-free way, and learn how to foster a more positive attitude about life.
